Early Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Activities for Infants
Math
Shape Walk
- Head outside with your child for a walk.
- Look for differently-shaped objects at your child's eye level.
- Point to the objects and talk about their shape. If possible, trace the shape's outline with your finger.
- Try to direct your child's eyes to the object you're talking about by saying their name and pointing to it.
Social-Emotional Learning
On the Floor
- Find a time when your baby is calm, alert, and ready to play.
- Lay your baby on a blanket with toys (baby toys, a scarf, board books, small bowls, a wooden spoon, etc.).
- Observe what items your child is interested in. Describe the objects and how your child is interacting with them.
- When it's time to move on to another activity (or your baby becomes unhappy) tell them how much you loved playing and what you'll do next with your day.
Activities for Toddlers
Math
Toy Patterns
- With your child, gather two different types of small toys (like blocks and toy cars, or balls and stuffed animals). Sort them into 2 piles based on their types.
- Place them in an alternating pattern, repeating three times if possible (example: block, car / block, car / block, car)
- Say the pattern out loud, pointing to each object as you say it. Ask your child: "What comes next?" Add that object to the pattern, and check your child's answer.
- Repeat with different objects.
Creativity
Kitchen Music
- Make a kitchen drum set! Give your baby shatter-proof "drums" like plastic bowls or pots, and "drumsticks" like spoons and spatulas.
- Demonstrate using a spoon or spatula to melodically tap on a pot, pan, or bowl.
- Encourage your child to drum on the bowls and pots with you.
- Make a kitchen song together!
