Wonder About the Weather

  1. Encourage your child to observe the weather each day. They can draw their observations over time in their notebook.
  2. Then, they can ask questions based on their observations. For example, if it has rained all week your child might ask, “Will it rain tomorrow too?”
  3. You can also do research to learn more, like checking out library books about the weather.
  4. You can wonder about other things that your child is interested in too!

Descriptive Words

  1. Throughout the day, while you’re interacting with each other, playing or running errands, think of different descriptive words you can use.
  2. For example, if your child says that a dog is “really big,” you can say, “Yes, it’s humongous.” Then, quickly brainstorm other synonyms together.
  3. Use this activity as an opportunity to share new and more complex words with your child, and watch how their vocabulary grows!

What Happens Next?

  1. With your child, come up with a new ending for a story, song or dance.
  2. Allow your child to take the lead on making the connection between what took place before and what they’d like to include for the new ending.
  3. Don’t hesitate to be silly! The ending doesn’t need to make sense!

Approaches to Learning

A Time I Felt ___

  1. Encourage your child to write and draw about times they felt a specific emotion such as happy, proud, sad, angry, frustrated or excited.
  2. Remember that scribble writing is OK!
  3. After, your child can talk about their artwork and feelings. If they felt emotions like anger, frustration, or sadness, you can also talk about ways they helped their bodies to feel better.
  4. You can write and draw too, then talk together with your child about both of your examples!

Check Out Informational Books

  1. Visit the library with your family to select informational books about a topic they’re interested in.
  2. Your librarian can help you to find developmentally appropriate books.
  3. You can also select a topic that is of interest to everyone in the family, so each person can select their own informational book and share what they’re learning.
  4. Or, have a special time where everyone shares about their own interests!

Math

More or Less?

  1. Wherever you are (home, playground, bus, store, etc.), direct your child's attention to compare groups of objects. Try to find groups with 5 items or less.
  2. Ask your child which group has "less" and which group has "more." Start with groups that have a big difference between "less" and "more," so your child will not need to count.
  3. Once your child identifies "less" and "more" easily, increase the difficulty. Compare two groups that are closer in number, and count to check which has "more" and which has "less."
  4. Try the game in different locations as you move throughout your day.

Robot Directions

  1. Choose a goal that you will direct your child, "the robot," to reach.
  2. Give your child a series of directions to help them get to the goal. Tell them one "move" at a time.
  3. Next, it's your turn to be the robot! Ask your child to give you directions, and follow them exactly (even if the directions move you away from the goal).
  4. Celebrate with a robot dance party!
