Music All Around Us

  1. Begin in a relatively quiet environment indoors or outside.
  2. Walk around and notice the sounds that you hear (birds chirping, horns honking, faucet dripping, dogs barking, fan blowing, etc.). Talk about them as you hear them.
  3. Together: tap, snap, hum, clap, or sing to the beat of the sounds you hear.
  4. Continue identifying sounds and following their rhythm in different ways.

Physical

How Do We Move When We ___?

  1. Tell your child that you will play a game where you will pretend to move like you are doing different actions.
  2. “We’ll move our bodies and act it out to show what we would look like.”
  3. Suggest different scenarios (including funny ones) such as riding a dinosaur, flying in a helicopter, floating in space and walking on hot sand.
  4. Take turns with your child to lead the game by demonstrating while suggesting different scenarios.

Musical Tempos

  1. Play some music. Hold a tissue or a scarf, and wave it to match the beat of the music.
  2. Ask your child to match your movements and the beat of the song.
  3. Talk about whether the music is fast or slow.
  4. Try alternating songs between slow and fast tempos and see if your child can change their movements to match.

From Here to There

  1. Tell your child that you will take turns coming up with creative ways to move from one point in the room to another.
  2. Change the movements and the speed of the movements. For example, move slowly on your tiptoes, hop around like a kangaroo, then crouch or crawl along.
  3. Include interesting ways to move around, over, on, or under furniture or objects.
  4. Take turns leading the game while the other follows.

Follow the Leader Fast and Slow

  1. Tell your child that you will play a game where you will follow the leader. “One person will lead and do some movements. The other person will follow and copy the movements. We’re also going to do the movements quickly and slowly.”
  2. Be the leader first and model different movements for your child to follow.
  3. Then, do the movements at different speeds, faster and faster, or slower and slower as they continue to follow along with you at that speed. For example, move your arms around at different speeds, or jump at different speeds.
  4. Take turns with your child to lead the game.

  1. Invite your child and other family members to join you as you have a dance party together.
  2. Play music with different rhythms and tempos while you all dance any way you’d like.

Follow the Words

  1. Encourage your child to use their fingers and eyes to point to and follow the words while you’re reading together.
  2. Show them how to move their fingers and eyes from left to right across the page, and down each line as you do it together.
  3. They don’t have to accurately point to each word as you read. They’re just developing hand-eye control and learning that written words can be read and spoken out loud.

Math

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes to 20

  1. Invite your child to count as you touch your head, shoulders, knees and toes with both hands.
  2. Now count as you touch each body part with both hands. Example one (touch head), two (touch shoulders), three (touch knees), four (touch toes) and stand back up and say five (touch head) and repeat until you count to twenty.
  3. Invite your child to lead the counting.

Role Play Voices

  1. While you’re role playing or pretend playing with your child, encourage them to use their tone of voice or volume to make the different characters come alive.
  2. Ask your child questions to support them. For example, “Oh, you’re a monster? How does your monster sound?”
  3. As they assign you a role, describe what you’re doing and why you sound that way to help them understand. For example, “Uh oh, he left his wallet, I will shout so he can hear me tell him to come back!”

  1. Have a talent show with your family! Anything that someone is proud they can do is a talent!

  1. Talk with your child about their body parts and all the different things they help them to do.
  2. Ask your child to draw a picture showing them doing their favorite activity. Then, they can share about all the body parts that help them do this activity.
  3. Throughout the day, you can also highlight all the things your body parts can do. For example, while dancing together, highlight the body parts that help you, or the body parts that help you to smell the flowers at the store.
