Sharing What You Like

Here's What To Do

1

Talk with your child about something you really enjoy, like a favorite hobby or activity to show them how to share their interests with others.

2

Now ask them about something they really like to do, asking follow up questions, like “why do you like that?” or “what’s your favorite part” to deepen their descriptions.

3

Invite them to draw a picture or show you something related to their favorite things.

4

Keep the conversation going! Look for opportunities to talk about your child’s favorite things throughout the week, prompting them to express themselves when you see they’re having a good time doing different activities.

P

Pause:

  • Sit and take a deep breath together before you begin.
E

Engage:

  • "What’s something you like to do with your friends or someone in our family?"
  • "What is it about that activity that makes it so special for you?"
E

Encourage:

  • "I love hearing all about what makes you happy. You did such a great job sharing!"
  • "It’s okay if you’re still thinking, maybe you can share more later when you’re ready!"
R

Reflect:

  • "How does it feel when someone listens to the things you like?"

Not quite ready?

Start by sharing something simple you enjoy, then ask your child to share something small, like their favorite color or snack.

Ready for more?

Ask your child to tell a story or share a favorite memory with a trusted adult.
