World Dance Party
Here's What To Do
Using the internet, find music from your family's culture. Dance to the music!
Next, find music from all around the world. Try a search for "world music playlist." Have a dance party to the global music!
While you're dancing, tell your child(ren) what you know about the place where the music is from. Show your child the place on a map.
Talk about how the types of music are similar to your culture's music, and different.

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Stretch your fingers high up into the sky. Touch your toes. Twist back and forth. Now you're ready to dance!
Engage:
- "We're going to dance to music from all over the world! This first song is a Cumbia song from Colombia, where my family is from. Let's dance!"
- "This is an Afrobeat song from Nigeria. Can I show you where Nigeria is on a map?"
Encourage:
- "What is the same between the last song and this song? I notice that both had fast drum beats. What do you notice?"
- "What is different between the music from Colombia and Nigeria? I noticed that the beats had a different rhythm."
Reflect:
- "What kind of music was your favorite to dance to? Should we listen to more another day?"
Not quite ready?
Focus on identifying similarities between different types of world music.
Ready for more?
If your child seems to like a particular music style, help them learn more by searching on the internet or checking out a book from the library.

As your child masters this skill...
They will understand that different types of music come from different cultures, and how to listen for similarities and differences in the styles.
