Here's What To Do

Choose a book with short sentences and lots of pictures.

While reading the book to your child, ask them questions about the pictures.

Point to the words that match the pictures.

Continue on each page of the book.

Pause:
- Sit in a quiet and relaxing space free from distraction.

Engage:
- When pointing to the pictures in the book, ask your child questions like “what is that” and “where have you seen this before”?
- "Look, the picture has a dog. This is the word dog, right here. This is the word "yellow," and look, the picture matches. It's a yellow dog!"

Encourage:
- Ask your child to repeat the words you read and point to the pictures that represent them.
- Respond to your child if they notice anything about the pictures or ask questions about them.

Reflect:
- Summarize what you learned today: that pictures and words in a book work together to tell a story!

Ask your child to find an object/person/animal in book illustrations as you read.
Ready for more?
As you read a book with your child, talk about the meaning of different punctuation marks.
As your child masters this skill...
