What Do We Wear?
Here's What To Do
Show your child the different types of clothes and tell them you’ll play a game with them.
“I’ll ask you what we wear when we’re doing something, or when there’s different weather, and you’ll point to it.” Some examples: [When it’s raining, When we’re swimming, When we’re sleeping, When it’s cold outside, When it’s hot outside]
You can also vary the game by pointing to an item of clothing and asking your child to say or show when we wear it.
Take turns leading the game. Your child can use gestures as they ask their question as well (e.g. showing rain with their fingers instead of saying “rain”).

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Briefly talk together about what you are wearing today and why. You can also briefly talk about how we use the clothes you’ll use during your game.
Engage:
- Use a funny voice like a game show host and say, “Let’s play “What do We Wear?””
- “I’ll ask you what we wear at different times or for different things we are doing. You can pick the clothes. Let’s try one together first. What do we wear when it’s raining?”
Encourage:
- Give your child a choice between two clothing items and give clues. “Do we wear a raincoat that keeps us dry when it’s raining, or these sunglasses when it’s raining and there’s no sun?”
Reflect:
- “What do you like to wear?” (Your child can also point to the clothing item instead of naming it)
Not quite ready?
Play pretend games together using different types of clothing. For example, wear a jacket when you’re pretending it’s snowing outside. You can also point out what you’re wearing each day as you get dressed, and why.
Ready for more?
Your child can wear some of the clothing and describe how they feel on their body.

As your child masters this skill...
They will share their thoughts about clothing and understand the reason we wear different clothing.
