How to name and collect materials to complete a task, with assistance.

Here's What To Do

1

Place a set of common household objects or toys in front of your child and tell them you’ll play a game.

2

Ask them to choose and name the object that you use for different tasks or jobs.

3

Sample questions:

  • “What do we use to eat cereal?”
  • “What do we use to call someone?”
  • “What do we use when we’re building?”
4

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Close your eyes, pause, and describe what you hear. Okay, we’re ready to begin!
E

Engage:

  • “Let’s play a game. I’ll show you some toys and household objects.”
  • “Then, I’ll ask you a question. You’ll find the toy or object we would use to do a job or task.”
E

Encourage:

  • If needed, review the names of the objects and how they’re used beforehand.
  • Give your child clues to help them select the appropriate object. Note that, depending on the household objects presented, they might select a different object that might still be appropriate for the task.
R

Reflect:

  • “Which clue was the hardest/easiest?”

Not quite ready?

Instead of playing the game, talk about and collect materials together that you will need for a certain game or task. For example, collect blocks before building together.

Ready for more?

After, ask your child to describe how that toy or object is used to do the job or task.
