Wear What I Wear

Here's What To Do

1

Tell your child you’ll play a game where you’ll put something on. Then, they should copy you and put the same thing on.

2

Put an item on one at a time so your child can copy you. They can also copy you as you take it off.

3

Give your child a chance to lead the game too!

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Warm up by taking a few deep breaths together. Then, ask your child to copy you as you do a few easy movements, like stretches, together.
E

Engage:

  • “Let’s play a dress up game. I’m going to put something on. You can copy me and put the same thing on.”
E

Encourage:

  • Point to the clothing item your child should select. Slowly show them how to put the item on as the follow along with you.
  • “I’m putting on my sock, can you put on yours?”
R

Reflect:

  • “Point to something that was hard for you to put on. Point to something that was easy for you to put on.”

Not quite ready?

Play a simple copy me game using actions your child already knows how to do. You can then try to include simple items of clothing like hats.

Ready for more?

Include more challenging actions for your child to imitate. For example, put on gloves or button a shirt.
