Turn the Pages
Here's What To Do
1
Encourage your child to help you turn the pages while you’re reading together.
2
You can even play a game after you’ve finished reading.
3
Your child can turn the pages to find the page with their favorite illustration or event. Or, you can ask them to find the page with the illustration showing a specific event.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Invite your child to choose the book they’d like to read with you.
E
Engage:
- “Let’s read ___.”
- “You can help me by turning the pages!”
E
Encourage:
- Demonstrate how to hold the book and turn the pages from front to back.
- Give suggestions to help them as they turn the page. For example, “Touch the top of the page with your finger.” Or, “Pinch the top with your two fingers and turn it carefully.”
R
Reflect:
- “Why should we turn the book’s pages carefully?”
Not quite ready?
Start with pages that are easier to turn, such as cloth or board books.
Ready for more?
Include books with thinner pages that are more difficult to separate and turn.

As your child masters this skill...
They will demonstrate hand-eye control with books.
