Transition Freeze
Here's What To Do
1
Tell your child that you will play a freeze game.
2
You will both dance or move around the room.
3
When you call out your child’s name, you both will freeze or stop. When you call out their name again, you can dance again.
4
Take turns leading the game so your child can also call out when you should freeze and go.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Do a few stretches or movements your child suggests together first.
E
Engage:
- “We are going to dance or move around the room.”
- “When I say your name we’ll freeze and stop! When I say your name again, we’ll start dancing again!”
E
Encourage:
- Give your child a warning before you call out their name. “Get ready to freeze. I’m going to say your name in three seconds. 3, 2, 1, ….”
- Encourage your child to watch you to know when to freeze and when to go.
R
Reflect:
- “Did you like playing this game? Why/ why not?”
Not quite ready?
Practice starting and stopping together before playing the game and dancing around. Instead of their name, use familiar words like “go” and “stop” to cue them during the game.
Ready for more?
Include two different sounds associated with different movements. For example, say their name when they should dance, and clap when they should wave their hands.

As your child masters this skill...
They will demonstrate understanding of cues to indicate when to move or be still.
