Toy Hokey Pokey

Here's What To Do

1

Sing a song like “Hokey Pokey” and change the lyrics as you encourage your child to move the toy and themselves in different ways at different speeds. For example:

  • You hold the toy up slow, you hold the toy down low.
  • You hold the toy up fast then you shake it side to side.
  • You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around.
2

That’s what it’s all about!

3

Take turns leading the song and changing the lyrics. The toy can move in lots of directions, speeds and ways: fast, slow, around, shake, twist, forwards, backwards…!

Mother and child play together (animated).

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Practice doing a few movements and stretches with the toy first before playing the game. For example, stretch down to the ground or from side to side.
E

Engage:

  • “Let’s play a game with your toy. We’ll sing and you’ll move your toy all around.”
  • “Listen carefully to the directions in the song so you know what to do.”
E

Encourage:

  • Play the game along with your child so they can follow you as they move their toy.
R

Reflect:

  • “What was your favorite way to move the toy?”

Not quite ready?

Repeat lyrics with familiar movements more than once so your child can practice following the directions and moving the toy accurately.
