This Is The Way
Here's What To Do
1
As you start a routine or activity, sing a song about what's coming up next in your day. You can use the tune of "Mulberry Bush" or another song you know.
2
Sing the same song at different points of the day, whenever you are switching activities. Examples:
- Putting on clothes
- Cleaning up
- Getting ready to leave
- Getting ready to eat
- Taking a bath
3
When you finish singing the song, talk through what will happen next in your day.
4
Repeat every day to help your baby transition more easily between activities.
Put PEER Into Action

P
Pause:
- Smile at your baby and give their hands or toes a gentle squeeze.
E
Engage:
- To the tune of "Mulberry Bush": "This is the way we change our diaper, change our diaper, change our diaper. This is the way we change our diaper, every single day!"
- "Now that we finished eating. What should we do next? Yes, it will be time to play!"
E
Encourage:
- As you sing the song, watch your baby's expressions.
- Continue to make eye contact and smile as you sing and talk.
R
Reflect:
- Does your baby seem to recognize the song and anticipate that something new is coming up?
Not quite ready?
Your baby may not seem like they're understanding transitions, but you're helping lay a foundation for positive rhythms and routines.
Ready for more?
See if your child can participate in transitions, like cleaning up toys before moving onto the next activity.

As your child masters this skill...
They will know that it's time to do something else whenever they hear the routine song.
