The Person I Admire

Here's What To Do

1

Talk with your child about someone they admire or respect.

2

You can show a book with their favorite characters (real or imaginary) to help them choose someone they want to write and draw about.

3

Then, they can write and draw about why they admire this person or character.

4

One or two ideas are fine to start – as they work, don’t be surprised if lots more ideas start showing up!

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Smile at each other and say one thing you admire or like about each other.
E

Engage:

  • “If you admire someone you respect or admire them because they’ve done something that is good or that you like.”
  • “Who do you admire? It can be someone you know, or someone you’ve read or heard about.”
E

Encourage:

  • Your child’s scribbles are their writing so be sure to praise their effort. Ask them to share about what they’ve done, instead of guessing what they’ve written or drawn.
  • “You are working so hard to write and draw about the person you admire. Can you tell me about them?”
R

Reflect:

  • “What do you admire or like about yourself?”

Not quite ready?

As you’re reading your child’s favorite book or looking at familiar photographs, ask your child to identify a person or character. Then, they can describe something about them. They can act something out, draw or write as well if they'd like.

Ready for more?

Do a fun mini project with your child where you both learn about an important person in history together.
