Your Child Will Learn

To recognize their name.

thats-my-name

That’s My Name!

Here's What To Do

1

Play "peek-a-boo" with me and say my name as we play.

2

Look in a mirror with me. Point to me in the mirror and say my name, then point to yourself and say your name.

3

Throughout the day, use my name often.

Put PEER Into Action

Mother and child play together (animated).
P

Pause:

  • Give me a hug and a kiss before playing peekaboo or looking in the mirror.
E

Engage:

  • "Where's Mateo? Where did Mateo go? Peek-a-boo! There's Mateo!"
  • "Who do I see in the mirror? I see Zuri, and Mommy!"
E

Encourage:

  • I learn my name by hearing it repeatedly. Say it during daily routines, like: "Good morning Mateo!" or "This is Mateo's teddy bear" or "Time to put pajamas on, Mateo!"
  • If I'm having difficulty learning my name, remind everyone to use a consistent name for me. I may be confused if I have too many nicknames.
R

Reflect:

  • When you say my name, do I look towards you, or respond with a sound? Those are some signs that I recognize my name.

Not quite ready?

If I'm not recognizing my name yet, keep playing games using my name and saying my name a lot throughout the day. I'll learn eventually with repetition.

Ready for more?

Help me learn more about myself by looking in a mirror with me and naming all of my features and physical attributes.
