Materials:

Purple flower

A blender or food processor, smoothie ingredients (frozen and fresh fruit, milk/coconut water/juice, other optional mix-ins)

Your Child Will Learn

How to prepare and enjoy a healthy snack.

Here's What To Do

1

Gather smoothie ingredients and a blender or food processor. Try to include one ingredient from each category:

  • Something frozen (frozen fruit, or ice cubes)
  • Something liquid (any type of milk, coconut water, juice)
  • Something fresh (any fresh fruit)
  • Something fun (nut butter, cocoa powder, coconut flakes, oats, yogurt, cinnamon)
2

Help your child add each ingredient to the blender. Talk about each ingredient as you add it (and taste, if appropriate).

3

Blend. Adjust the taste and consistency if needed.

4

Pour your smoothie into cups and enjoy!

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Wash your hands before you begin.
E

Engage:

  • "We need a frozen fruit. Should we use strawberry or mango?"
  • "We need milk in this recipe so that it's liquid-y enough to drink. Also, milk has lots of protein which helps you feel full and helps your bones grow strong."
E

Encourage:

  • "It sounds like the smoothie isn't tasting good to you yet. Let's try adding some strawberry and taste it again."
  • "It's okay that you spilled the milk. Sometimes that's what happens when you cook!"
R

Reflect:

  • "Should we make this smoothie again the next time we need a healthy snack?"

Not quite ready?

Do all the cooking steps for your child, but let them taste the ingredients and watch you cook.

Ready for more?

Write down the recipe for the smoothie you made and make it again together.
