Straw Bubble Painting

Here's What To Do

1

Put a bit of watercolor or poster paint into a small container. Add a few drops of dish soap, and stir together. (You may need to add water, depending on the consistency). Repeat with a few different colors.

2

Dip a drinking straw into one of the soapy paints.

3

Hold the straw over paper, then blow through the straw. When the bubbles pop, they will make patterns on the paper.

4

Experiment with blowing a lot of bubbles in the paint container, then pressing the paper on top of the bubbles until they pop.

5

Mother and child play together (animated).

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Set up your art work space. Sit down and take a deep breath together.
E

Engage:

  • Let your child help you set up and prepare the paint mixtures.
  • "Can we make some designs on the paper with bubble paint? Blow bubbles over the paper, then see what happens when it pops!"
E

Encourage:

  • Ask your child to try blowing fast and slow to notice the different effects on the design.
  • Laugh and have fun when your child creates bubble art!
R

Reflect:

  • Talk about the finished bubble painting. What shapes and colors do you notice?

Not quite ready?

If blowing bubbles is too tricky, do that part for your child. Ask them to choose the colors and to pop the bubble with the paper.

Ready for more?

Encourage your child to plan out a design and then execute it with the bubble paint.
