Singing Switch Up

Here's What To Do

1

While you're singing your child’s favorite songs together, use funny voices, different volumes and tones to change the ways you sing the songs.

2

For example, whisper, be a loud robot, or roar like a lion!

3

Take turns with your child to suggest how to sing the songs.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Have your child repeat after you as you sing a simple word like “hello” using different tones and volumes.
E

Engage:

  • “Let’s sing one of your favorite songs using a funny voice.”
  • “We can pretend to be different things, and use different volumes like loud or soft.”
E

Encourage:

  • Brainstorm and practice the selected voice together first. Your child can also repeat after you.
  • Instead of describing the voice when it’s their turn to choose, your child can just sing the way they’d like while you copy them.
R

Reflect:

  • “What voice should we use the next time we sing that song?"

Not quite ready?

Focus on either volume or tone, rather than both.

Ready for more?

Encourage your child to use their facial expressions and body language as well.
