Shopping Cart Counting
Here's What To Do
1
When shopping with a shopping cart or basket, ask your child to count items as they're added to the cart (up to 3 items).
2
Before you place any items in the cart, ask: "How many things are in our cart?" (Zero!)
3
Each time you add something to the cart, ask your child to count the total number of items.
4
When you get to the checkout line, ask your child to count each item when you hand it to the cashier.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- If using a shopping cart, place your child in the shopping cart seat before you begin shopping, make eye contact and announce, “Let’s play a counting game today while we shop!”
E
Engage:
- "How many things are in our cart now?"
- "Can you count each thing as I take it out of the cart?"
E
Encourage:
- "Hmmm… I don't think the total is 3. Let's go slowly and count each one together, pointing to each thing as we go."
- If your child is having trouble counting by themselves, count along with them.
R
Reflect:
- How high can your child count accurately? Keep practicing and the number will get higher and higher!
Not quite ready?
Ask your child to count two items.
Ready for more?
Ask your child to count up to 5 objects.

As your child masters this skill...
They will count 1-3 accurately.
