Same or Different Around the House
Here's What To Do
1
While you’re doing things together like chores, encourage your child to notice how items might be the same or different.
2
For example, while doing the laundry, compare how shirts might be the same (they have sleeves) and different (different colors, sizes); or compare utensils and crockery while setting the table.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Look at the objects in front of you together. Each of you can share a few things you notice about them first.
E
Engage:
- “How are these ____ the same?”
- “How are they different?”
E
Encourage:
- Ask questions to help your child notice similarities and differences.
- “How are these forks different? Are they all the same size?”
R
Reflect:
- “What was one thing you noticed when you were comparing the ___?”
Not quite ready?
As you’re doing tasks together, point out things you notice about how objects are similar and different. “Wow! These socks are both yellow, but one is large and one is small.”
Ready for more?
Your child can also sort the objects based on different categories.

As your child masters this skill...
They will shift their attention on a few qualities of objects, tasks and people.
