Your Child Will Learn

To follow safety rules.

Here's What To Do

1

Talk with your child about how to stay safe at home, at school or in the community.

2

Focus on one or two important safety rules or expectations.

3

After talking, your child can draw, write (scribbles are great) or cut out pictures to make a safety poster to help remind them of what to do.

4

Hang their poster somewhere where they can see it to help them (and everyone) to remember their safety rules.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Pull together your poster paper and crayons or markers and settle in together at the table to be ready to draw together.
E

Engage:

  • “What will you put on your safety poster? What will it remind you to do?”
  • “What are some of the safety rules we need to remember in the house? How about when we are outside?”
E

Encourage:

  • Praise your child and point out specific ways they are being safe. “You are being so safe! You are using those scissors very gently and carefully as you cut out your pictures!”
  • If they get stuck, give them prompts, such as, “What are some rules for when we’re outside playing? Or in the kitchen?”
R

Reflect:

  • I know that sometimes it’s hard to remember the rules. Which are the ones that are most important to remember?

Not quite ready?

Instead of creating the poster, read a book about a specific safety rule or expectation. Then, practice it together.

Ready for more?

Talk together about the consequences of not following safety rules as well.
