Safety Books
Here's What To Do
1
Read a book about safety with your child and other family members so that you can relate what you’re reading to family safety rules and procedures.
2
After, talk together about how to stay safe as a family. When possible, be explicit and focus on what to do versus what not to do.
3
Choose something you read about to act out and practice as a family.
Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- As a family, do a few stretches and smile together to help you get ready to focus as you read.
E
Engage:
- “Let’s read this book about how to stay safe.”
- Point to an illustration. “What are they doing to be safe?”
E
Encourage:
- Praise your child and point out specific ways your child is being safe. “You are being so safe, you are staying far away from the hot stove!”
- You can also make up special gestures together to show when something is safe or not safe. You can use these gestures with your child as an indicator of safety instead of saying “no.”
R
Reflect:
- “How can we be safe when we ___?”
Not quite ready?
Focus on one or two specific areas of safety that are of particular concern to you. After reading the book, practice the safety rules together.
Ready for more?
Your child can also draw a picture to remind themselves and family members about a safety rule.
As your child masters this skill...
They will follow safety rules.
