Rubber Band Guitar

Here's What To Do

1

Encourage your child to make a rubber band guitar by placing rubber bands around an open shoebox.

2

Leave some space in between each rubber band so they can pluck each rubber band like they’re playing a guitar.

3

After, encourage your child to play their guitar as you sing and dance together.

4

You can even make up songs together!

Mother and child play together (animated).

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Open and close your hands and wiggle your fingers together.
E

Engage:

  • “You can make a rubber band guitar!”
  • “Stretch these rubber bands around the shoebox first. Then, you can play your guitar!”
E

Encourage:

  • Show your child how to stretch the rubber band around the shoebox and encourage them to do the rest independently.
  • Encourage them as they pluck the rubber bands and explore the different sounds. They can try playing the guitar using different fingers.
R

Reflect:

  • “How did your fingers feel when you were playing your guitar?”

Not quite ready?

Use a thinner box so it is easier to put the rubber bands around it. Your child can also pluck the rubber hands with more than one finger at a time.

Ready for more?

Your child can try to pluck the rubber bands in a repetitive pattern e.g. red rubber band, blue rubber band, red rubber band, blue rubber band.
