Roll the Die
Here's What To Do
1
Tell your child you will be rolling a die together and then saying how many dots they see.
2
Roll the die then have your child tell you the number of dots without counting.
3
Repeat several times, taking turns rolling the die.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Put away devices or other distractions and get ready to play together by taking a deep breath.
E
Engage:
- Start with rolling the die and asking “Oh it stopped rolling, can you tell me how many dots you see without counting them?”
- Tell your child, “It's your turn to roll the die. How many dots do you see this time?”
E
Encourage:
- If your child doesn’t know the number, give them a hint but try not to give them the whole number. Try saying, “There are th-th-th-thrrrr, yes the number three.”
- Don’t worry if your child has to count the first few times to recognize how many dots are on the side of the die that is facing up.
R
Reflect:
- “Was it hard not being able to count the dots?"
Not quite ready?
After you roll, have your child touch the dots on the die as you say, “One, two, three our number is three.”
Ready for more?
Repeat the same activity but this use two dice.

As your child masters this skill...
Will start recognizing groups of two and three items without counting.
