Rituals and Routines
Here's What To Do
1
Try to keep a consistent time for daily activities like mealtimes, playtimes, outings, baths, and bedtimes.
2
Consider if there are simple rituals we could add into our busy schedules. Some ideas:
- Use the same bib, cup, or plate at mealtime
- Play the same music at naptime
- Read a story at bedtime, then kiss everyone goodnight
- Give me a hug or tummy tickle when I'm finished dressing
3
If I'm moving, taking a vacation, going to the doctor, or disrupting my routine in another way, it can help if some of my rituals are the same.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Think about rituals and routines we already have in our family.
E
Engage:
- "Let's get ready for bed! We need your teddy bear, sleep sack and choo choo pajamas."
- "It's almost 12:00, which is lunchtime. Let's get some food!"
E
Encourage:
- If I have to go to a new place, bring along a favorite stuffed animal, cup, pajamas (etc.) so there's something familiar to comfort me. Try to keep my meal and nap schedules the same.
- When I'm with another caregiver, give them a list of my important rituals and routines.
R
Reflect:
- How might you be able to change our routine or add a ritual to help me have a more predictable day?

As your child grows...
They will continue to want routine and consistency. This helps them feel in control as lots of other changes happen in their world.
