Repeat Sounds After Me
Here's What To Do
1
Invite your child to play a listening game with you. Say: “I’ll make a sound and then you repeat after me.”
2
Say simple, familiar sounds like “ba” or “oooo.”
3
You can use different types of voices and volumes too, like roaring loud like a lion.
4
You and your child can take turns leading the game.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Tell your child that you will play a game that requires sharp listening skills and to “turn” on their ears (motion turning on your ears).”
E
Engage:
- Smile and use animated facial expressions and voices to make the game fun.
- Use funny, familiar sounds that your child already loves to make.
E
Encourage:
- Encourage your child to watch your mouth as you say the sound, “Watch my mouth as I make the sound.”
- Make the sound a few times before asking them to continue making the sound with you.
R
Reflect:
- What sound did you like the most?
Not quite ready?
Throughout the day, point out and make familiar sounds around you: “I hear a car horn. Beep beep.”
Ready for more?
Include some familiar letter sounds and use different tones of voices and volumes e.g. whisper like a mouse.

As your child masters this skill...
They will begin to be able to identify the beginning sounds of spoken words with help from adults.
