Here's What To Do

Tell your child you're going to play a repeating and following game.

Give your child a direction. Ask them to repeat the words out loud, and then follow the directions with their bodies.

Switch roles- have your child give you directions which you repeat and then follow.

Pause:

  • Smile and wave to your child. Ask them to wave back to show they're ready.

Engage:

  • "First you'll repeat my direction, and then you'll follow the direction. Ready? Stand up! Say, 'stand up!'. Now go ahead and do it."
  • Other example directions: "Take three steps forward!", "Touch your toes!", "Put your hands on your head!", "Cover your eyes!"

Encourage:

  • To help your child succeed, keep your directions clear and short. Make eye contact with your child when you give the direction.
  • If your child forgets to repeat the direction out loud before doing it, repeat it again and give them a chance to try again.

  • "Who else could play this game with us next time?"
