Reaching High and Low to 20
Here's What To Do
Invite your child to reach high and low while counting to 20.
Show your child how to reach high and low, first put both arms straight up in the air and reach up high and then bend down and reach for the floor, repeat that movement a few times.
Start with your arms at your side, count when your arms are up high and count when your arms are down low.
Example, arms up “one,” arms reaching to the floor “two,” arms up high “three,” arms reaching to the floor “four,” and repeat the movement again until you reach the number twenty.
Invite your child to lead the counting and have them count faster, slower or with a different voice.

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- "Stand facing your child, together wiggle your arms and legs as you get ready to play the game.”
Engage:
- Let's start with the opposite arm, so this time start with your left arm first.
- Try starting by reaching for your left foot first and do the movements in reverse.
Encourage:
- "Are you getting confused? That's okay! Let's just start over!"
- "Let's start with our arms just going high first, and then we’ll add reaching high and low!"
Reflect:
- “Was counting to twenty hard? What did you find easy?”
Not quite ready?
Focus on counting to fifteen.
Ready for more?
Focus on counting past twenty.

As your child masters this skill...
