Paper Roll Animals

Here's What To Do

1

Start with the inner roll from from a roll of paper towels or toilet paper.

2

Have your child paint the paper roll like the body of their favorite animal. (Note: You can use markers or crayons instead of paint if you'd like.)

3

Ask your child's ideas for other parts of the animal to make out of paper (head, legs, tail, wings, fins, etc.). Help your child cut these shapes out, and encourage them to decorate the paper shapes with details.

4

After the paint dries, help your child glue the paper parts on the animal's body.

Mother and child play together (animated).

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Cover your work surface with newspaper or cardboard.
E

Engage:

  • "What does a tiger's body look like? Orange with black stripes? So what color should you paint on the roll first?"
  • "What else do we need to add to make this a pig?"
E

Encourage:

  • "Can you tell me how I should cut out the elephant's head? What shape should it be?"
  • Help your child use scissors by holding your hand over theirs. Help your child glue by holding the paper parts in place until they dry.
R

Reflect:

  • Was your child able to represent their ideas about animals with art?

Not quite ready?

Through each step of creating the paper roll animal, show them how to do it first and see if they can copy you.

Ready for more?

Ask your child to create a habitat for the animal out of paper.
