Noticing Details in Pictures
Here's What To Do
1
Choose a familiar picture book with large pictures and not too many details in the illustrations.
2
On each page, help me find interesting or funny details like apples on an apple tree or sunglasses on a cow. If there is a character or object that repeats throughout the book, ask me to find it on each page.
3
Ask me questions about the pictures as we read.
4
Repeat whenever we read together!

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Snuggle with me in our special reading spot.
E
Engage:
- "I'm noticing some apples in the apple tree. Can you point to the apples?"
- "What animal do you see flying in the sky?"
E
Encourage:
- If needed, give me hints like tapping the page near the detail, or telling me where it's located. Like: "Where is the ball… the boy is holding the ball!"
- Try covering part of the page so there are fewer things for me to look at.
R
Reflect:
- What are some other visual details you could point out for me throughout the day? (on food packaging, wall art, advertisements, etc.)
Not quite ready?
Continue to point out details in book illustrations. Over time, I will start to notice more details on my own.
Ready for more?
Ask me to notice characters' emotions in picture books. Ask me why they might be feeling that way.

As your child masters this skill...
They will be able to point to details in pictures and answer questions about the pictures in books.
