My Alphabet Book
Here's What To Do
1
Staple or clip together 27 blank sheets of paper to make a booklet.
2
Write one capital and lowercase letter at the top of each page (like A a, B b, C c, etc.).
3
Invite your child to draw something that starts with the letter on the page. Write the name of their drawing next to or under the picture (like “dinosaur” on the D d page).
4
Over time, complete a picture for each letter. Read your alphabet book together once it’s complete!

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Do this activity in a comfortable space with a flat surface where you and your child can face each other while drawing
E
Engage:
- Say to your child, “you are learning the alphabet so let’s create a book that shows your understanding and creativity”
- Follow your child’s lead by letting them decide what image or object they will draw to represent the alphabet letters on each page
E
Encourage:
- Ask your child to describe (colors, shapes, lines) the image or object while they are drawing
- You don’t have to complete the drawings in alphabetical order! Feel free to skip around to different letters until the book is complete
R
Reflect:
- What can you tell about your child’s interests and curiosities from their drawings?
Not quite ready?
Think of images and objects together and draw them for your child
Ready for more?
Encourage your child to write the names for the drawings they create; help them with spelling or allow them to use invented spelling

As your child masters this skill...
They will understand that all things have names that begin with letters from the alphabet
