Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Find a space for your child to move around and stretch with your arms up high and then touch your toes.
E
Engage:
- Let’s try marching in place as we count to 10.
- “Let’s try taking turns saying the numbers as we step.” For example, you say “One” and march together, and your child says “Two” and march together. Continue until you reach ten. Then you turn around and march back.
E
Encourage:
- If your child is having trouble counting their marching steps, try marching slowly and pausing between steps.
- “Let me show you how to march and you count along with me.”
R
Reflect:
- “Was it hard to count to 10? Did you forget any numbers?”
Not quite ready?
Focus on counting from one to seven or eight.
Ready for more?
Focus on counting past ten while the child continues to march as they count.

As your child masters this skill...
Child will be able to count to ten with ease and apply counting to other daily tasks.
