Line them Up
Here's What To Do
Pick three objects and place them in a row. Ask your child to help you line them up by size, length, or weight.
Together play "Which is Which?" by asking fun, simple questions that start with “which,” such as: (Let them touch and move the objects as they answer.)
"Which one is the biggest?"
"Which one is the smallest?"
“Which is longest?”
“Which is shortest?”
“Which is the heaviest?”
After your child answers, repeat what they said and add more descriptive words:"That’s right! The marker is the longest, the crayon is medium, and the pencil is the shortest!"
Ask your child to line them up again but this time with a different attribute than before and play “Which is which” again. Repeat as time permits.
Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Put away distractions and give your child a hug.
Engage:
- "Can you find the longest one?" “How about the shortest?”
- “How else can you line up the objects?”
Encourage:
- Cheer them on with a big smile even if they don’t get the right answer!
- "That’s not quite right! Let’s line these up side by side. Which is longer? The crayon or the pencil?
Reflect:
- “What was your favorite way to line up the objects?”
Not quite ready?
Focus on comparing two objects instead of three.
Ready for more?
Try the same line up but with four objects instead of three.
As your child masters this skill...
They will measure and compare the size, length and weight of 3 different objects.
