Let’s Write About __

Here's What To Do

1

Ask your child to choose a topic they’d like to write and draw about.

2

Encourage them to hold their paper down with one hand and hold their writing utensil with the other hand as they write and draw.

3

You can write and draw about the same topic on your own paper.

4

Then, share about what you both wrote and drew about.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • With your child, wiggle and shake your fingers, and open and close your palms to warm up.
E

Engage:

  • “Let’s write and draw!”
  • “What would you like to write and draw about?”
E

Encourage:

  • If your child isn’t sure what to write about, suggest two topics based on their interests. “Should we write about a trip in a helicopter, or our day at the beach?”
  • Show your child how to hold the paper down with one hand and hold their crayon as you write on your paper. Encourage them to do the same. “Let’s try to hold the crayon with these fingers like this.”
R

Reflect:

  • “What should we write and draw about next time?”

Not quite ready?

Place a weight on the paper so it doesn’t move so that your child can focus on practicing to grip their writing utensil.

Ready for more?

Include a wide range of writing utensils, such as pens, so that your child can practice using different types of writing utensils.
