Learning to Wave Bye-Bye

Here's What To Do

1

Let me see and hear you wave "bye-bye" in a variety of situations throughout the day.

2

Play a "bye-bye" game when putting away toys. Say "bye-bye" to each toy as you put it away, and encourage me to wave bye-bye.

3

When you see me wave bye-bye in an appropriate situation, celebrate!

Mother and child play together (animated).

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Give me a hug before we practice saying bye-bye.
E

Engage:

  • "Bye-Bye, Mommy! Have a great day at work!"
  • "Bye-Bye, truck! Time to go back in the toy bin."
E

Encourage:

  • If I'm still learning how to make the waving motion, help me by gently shaking my forearm.
  • When I wave bye-bye, confirm and describe what's happening, like: "Yes, Grandma's leaving, bye-bye Grandma!"
R

Reflect:

  • Am I waving bye-bye or responding to bye-bye in the right situations?

Not quite ready?

Keep modeling waving bye-bye yourself. I will get the hang of it eventually!

Ready for more?

Help me learn to wave or say "hello." See if you can help me learn to say "bye-bye" out loud.
