Here's What To Do

1

Make a kitchen drum set! Give your baby shatter-proof "drums" like plastic bowls or pots, and "drumsticks" like spoons and spatulas.

2

Demonstrate using a spoon or spatula to melodically tap on a pot, pan, or bowl.

3

Encourage your child to drum on the bowls and pots with you.

4

Make a kitchen song together!

Mother and child play together (animated).

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Get down on the floor with your baby and give them a big smile.
E

Engage:

  • "Dada's going to drum on the bowl like this... Can you drum on the bowl too?"
  • "The bowl sounds like this when I drum... the pot sounds like this when I drum? Hear how they're different?"
E

Encourage:

  • Try to get your baby to mimic your taps by guiding their hands as they tap on objects.
  • Talk about what your baby is doing, like, "Oh, you found out that a metal spoon on a metal pot makes a clanging sound. Do you like that sound?"
R

Reflect:

  • Did your baby enjoy experimenting with different sounds?

Not quite ready?
