I Spy Kitchen Words
Here's What To Do
1
During meal preparation, while we're eating, or anytime we're in the kitchen, play a game of "I Spy Kitchen Words."
2
Choose two items in the kitchen, and bring me to a spot where I can see both (or bring them both to me). Example items:
- appliances (fridge, microwave, toaster, etc.)
- utensils (fork, knife, spoon, etc.)
- serving items (plate, cup, bowl)
- cooking tools (pot, pan, etc.)
- food
3
Say: "I spy… [kitchen item]. Which one is the [kitchen item]?" Pause for several seconds, and see if I look at, point to, babble towards, or say the correct item.
4
Continue with more items for as long as we're having fun!

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Smile and give me a big hug before we begin.
E
Engage:
- "I spy… a fridge! Is this the fridge (point), or is this the fridge (point)?"
- "I spy… a spoon. Is this the spoon (hold it up), or is this the spoon?"
E
Encourage:
- If I look at, point to, or vocalize towards the right item, confirm my correct answer. Like: "That's right, this is a cup! And this here is a bowl. Great cup finding!"
- If I don't answer, or go for the incorrect item, gently correct me. Like: "Oops! This one's the pot. This one's the bowl."
R
Reflect:
- Which words do I seem to understand? Which words am I still learning?
Not quite ready?
Pick me up and go on a "kitchen tour" with me. Point out and name all the items we can see in the kitchen as we walk by.
Ready for more?
Play "I Spy Kitchen Words" with more unfamiliar kitchen items, like a spatula, grater, or can opener.

As your child masters this skill...
They will begin to understand more and more kitchen vocabulary words.
