“I” Sentences
Here's What To Do
1
Remind your child that “I” is a letter and a word.
2
Brainstorm a few sentences with “I” in it such as “I like ___” or “I am ___.”
3
Then, encourage your child to write the sentences to describe themselves. You can write sentences to describe yourself too!
4
Encourage and praise your child’s scribbles, it’s their writing!
Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Smile at each other and say an encouraging “I” statement to each other like, “I love spending time with you.”
E
Engage:
- “Let’s think of some sentences that have the word ‘I’ in them.”
- “Now, you can write some of them and describe yourself!"
E
Encourage:
- Suggest simple “I” sentences.
- Write the sentences so your child can reference them as they write. Remember, they’re still learning and practicing how to write so praise their efforts!
R
Reflect:
- “What did you write about yourself?”
Not quite ready?
Suggest simple “I” sentences that your child can repeat, then complete, e.g. “I like ___.” Your child can practice just writing “I” instead of the entire sentence.
Ready for more?
Your child can try to use letter-sound correspondence to write a letter or a few letters to represent words in their sentence.
As your child masters this skill...
They will identify the letter “I” in the environment.
