How Music Makes Me Feel
Here's What To Do
Play different kinds of music. Encourage your child to draw or paint to show how the music makes them feel.
After, your child can share what they created and how they felt listening to the different types of music.
You can also talk together about how they felt in their body as they listened to the different types of music.
If you’d like, you can do the same. Then, compare how each type of music made each of you feel, noting that you might feel differently.

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Briefly dance to a couple types of music with different tempos or styles to notice how the music might make you move or feel differently.
Engage:
- “I’ll play different types of music.”
- “You can draw (or paint) to show how you feel as you listen to the different music.”
Encourage:
- Remember we all react differently to music and your child can have feelings that are different from yours.
- Encourage them to draw or paint whatever they would like. The artwork doesn’t have to change because the music has.
Reflect:
- “How did you feel when I played ____? Did you feel the same when I played ___?”
Not quite ready?
Instead of drawing, play your child’s favorite music and ask them to share why they like that music and how they feel when they listen to it.
Ready for more?
Encourage your child to compare the different artwork they made to note how they might be similar or different based on their feelings and the type of music played.

As your child masters this skill...
They will discuss reasons for their feelings and behaviors.
