Helping Each Other Game
Here's What To Do
Identify a starting and ending point that family members can run between. Place a group of different types of items that are safe to carry at one end. Divide into pairs.
Pairs will run to items. Then, they’ll ask each other for help as they work together to carry as many items as possible back to the other line. For example, they can make a basket with their joined hands.
Make the task similarly challenging for everyone by having older family members carry larger items, for example.
Teams can run and gather items at the same time, or take turns. Time each team and count how many items each team can carry.
Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Take turns leading some stretching exercises before starting.
Engage:
- “We’ll work together in teams to carry as many things as we can!”
- “Remember to ask each other for help!”
Encourage:
- “What could we say to encourage each other?”
- “How can we ask for help?”
Reflect:
- “How did it feel to ask for help and work together?”
Not quite ready?
Simplify the task by providing a bag.
Ready for more?
With your family, brainstorm ways to make the game even more challenging, and play again.
As your child masters this skill...
They will ask adults and peers for help to complete tasks.
