Handprint Butterfly
Here's What To Do
1
Use a pencil to trace the outline of your child's hands on paper. Do the same with your own hands. (You could also use paint to make handprints, if you prefer.)
2
Cut out all four hands. Draw the outline of a butterfly's body on a piece of paper.
3
Your hand cut-outs will be the wings: glue or tape the adult's hands on both sides of the butterfly's body, then add your child's hands below.
4
Ask your child to decorate the butterfly with crayons, markers, colored pencils, paint, or stickers.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Smile at your child and give them a high-five.
E
Engage:
- "Let's trace our hands to be the butterfly's wings! Can you hold your hand really still on the paper?"
- "Look, our hands are the wings! Can you decorate the wings to make a beautiful butterfly?"
E
Encourage:
- Describe your child's drawing, like: "I'm noticing you're using so many different colors!"
- Tell your child how much you loved making art with them!
R
Reflect:
- Did your child enjoy this art activity? What else could you make with handprints?
Not quite ready?
Guide your child's hands as they color with a crayon.
Ready for more?
Show your child how to decorate the butterfly with simple designs like stripes or polka dots.

As your child masters this skill...
They will practice drawing with different tools.
