Going Up Stairs

Here's What To Do

1

Help me learn how to go up steps (I'll learn how to go down steps later).

  • Place a favorite toy on the second or third step to encourage me.
  • When I'm first learning, I'll crawl up the steps on my hands and knees.
  • Stand behind me and be ready to steady me if I lose balance.
2

If I'm able to crawl up steps, help me learn to go up a step while standing on my feet.

  • Stand behind me and hold one or both hands. Try to hold my hands at my shoulder height (without stretching my arms above my head).
3

If I can go up one step on my feet, help me go up a few steps in a row.

  • If possible, use stairs that have a railing I can reach. I can also touch a wall for balance.
  • Stand behind me and hold my hand that's not on the railing.
  • I'll probably put both feet on each step at first. Later, I'll learn how to alternate feet.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Give me a high five before we start! (If I'm still learning a high five, gently guide my arm for me).
E

Engage:

  • "Can you get your ducky on the step? Go ahead, Daddy's right here to help you."
  • "Okay can you take a big step up? I've got your hand!"
E

Encourage:

  • Try to give me lots of practice going up steps. If our home doesn't have steps, we can go to a playground or a park to practice.
  • If I prefer to climb steps with both hands holding the railing, let me carry a stuffed animal in one arm to encourage me to use only one hand for support.
R

Reflect:

  • Am I getting more confident going up stairs?

Not quite ready?

Encourage me to crawl on flat surfaces. Help me up onto my hands and knees, then place a favorite toy just out of reach.

Ready for more?

Help me learn how to go down stairs. When I'm first learning, help me sit on my bottom and "scootch" down to the lower stair, instead of trying to stand on my feet and walk down.

As your child masters this skill...

They will be able to go up stairs, at first by crawling and then by standing on their feet.
