Fashion Designer
Here's What To Do
1
Before you begin, cut up some fabric scraps or old clothes with bright and interesting colors and designs. (Or, you can also do this activity with paper or magazine pages cut up).
2
Ask your child to draw a self-portrait that includes their whole body.
3
Tell them that they're going to be a fashion designer and they're going to make an outfit for their picture.
4
Help your child use school glue to adhere the fabric scraps to the self-portrait. Cut out shapes for them if needed.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Ask your child to close their eyes and imagine their favorite outfit.
E
Engage:
- "Can you draw a picture of yourself that has your whole body in it? Don't forget arms and legs!"
- List different types of clothing and ask your child which one(s) they will choose for their self-portrait.
E
Encourage:
- Let your child take the lead with their ideas, but help them cut or glue when necessary.
- Prompt your child, like: "Does your portrait need shoes? What about something on your head?"
R
Reflect:
- Ask your child where they would wear this outfit in real life if they could.
Not quite ready?
Draw a simple picture of your child's body, then have them color their outfit.
Ready for more?
Make an outfit for a doll, action figure, or stuffed animal by gluing fabric together.

As your child masters this skill...
They will know how to express their ideas through different visual art materials.
