Family Yard Sale
Here's What To Do
Work together as a family to plan and gather household items to sell at a family yard sale. (Note: if having a real yard sale is not practical, you can follow the same steps but have a make-believe yard sale instead!)
Talk about how you will sell items to earn money.
Help your child create price tags and design a flier to post in your neighborhood. On the day of your yard sale, let your children actively participate in the design and set-up of the yard sale.
Let your children collect the money for sold items. Show them how you count the money and make change. At the end, count how much you've made!

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Smile, get excited, and have fun with this activity!
Engage:
- Work with your children to decide and assign different roles, like cashier (with adult help), yard organizer, and customer helper.
- Review and rehearse ways to talk to potential customers, like “how may I help you” and “thank you for stopping by today.”
Encourage:
- Compliment and praise your children when they help customers and demonstrate good service.
- Help your children keep track of the money, and reinforce that all their hard work will pay off!
Reflect:
- Talk about how people used money today at the yard sale.
Not quite ready?
Simulate a pretend yard sale in your living room so your children understand how a yard sale works.
Ready for more?
Talk with your child about if they would rather save or spend the money, and what they would spend it on if they were allowed to choose.

As your child masters this skill...
They will understand how money is exchanged when goods are sold.
