Your Child Will Learn

How to choose by voting for something they like or want.

Here's What To Do

1

Gather family members and let them vote together on a treat for dessert

2

Offer options, such as two flavors of ice cream, or two types of cookies and demonstrate by raising your hand and voting for one. Then ask each family member to vote.

3

Help your child participate by helping them raise a hand, point, or say their choice.

4

Count the votes together and declare the winner. Let your family have fun voting throughout the week!

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Settle in at the end of your meal and get everyone’s attention by reaching for one another’s hands.
E

Engage:

  • "What do you think Grandma will pick for dessert? Can you guess!"
  • "What should we vote on next time we have a special meal together?"
E

Encourage:

  • "You voted just like everyone else! Your choice is important!"
  • "Even if your choice didn’t win, we see what happens next time!"
R

Reflect:

  • "What was your favorite part about voting with our family?"

Not quite ready?

Let your child watch the family vote and choose by pointing instead of raising a hand.

Ready for more?
