Family Photo Fun
Here's What To Do
Sit close and hold up or show your child a picture of a family activity or celebration. Pause to see your child's reaction.
Point out details in the picture: "You really liked the balloons! You smiled so big!" If your child reacts, mirror their expression and excitement.
Ask your child what else they remember from that day. Have them look at the picture to help them recall details of what happened.
Repeat with one or two more pictures to help your child remember more about the activity or celebration.
Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Find a cozy place to sit and give your child a warm hug.
Engage:
- "What do you see in this picture?" (Point together!)
- "You pointed to the cake—you're telling me you liked the special cake that we ate!"
Encourage:
- If your child has a hard time remembering, gently remind them of things they did such as, "We went to the park and met all of our cousins. Can you remember who was there?”
- Use the pictures to help them recall the event. Share one thing that you remember first, then ask them to share another.
Reflect:
- “You smiled when you looked at the family celebration pictures, what do you think we should celebrate next time?"
Not quite ready?
Show just one picture and describe it simply: "Here's you and Daddy!" Clap and smile when they look.
Ready for more?
Let your child choose a picture to talk about first or help them think of another family celebration to remember.
As your child masters this skill...
They will be able to talk about events that happened in the past.
