Family Book Choice

Here's What To Do

1

Visit the library together and, as a family, or in pairs, choose two books that you think other family members will like.

2

You can check them all out and have fun choosing your favorites together.

3

Or, briefly present two books to each person so they can choose which book they’d like to check out.

4

You might help your family choose by showing the cover and a few pages, describing a familiar book or reading the description.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Before selecting books for others, each person can share the kinds of books they like, or would like to read next.
E

Engage:

  • “What kinds of books would you like to read?”
  • “What kinds of books do you think your brother or sister would like? How about Grandma?”
E

Encourage:

  • Your child can picture walk through the books before they choose the books for themselves and others.
  • If your child isn’t sure which book to choose for themselves, they can choose all of the books. Read them together over time and talk about their preferences.
R

Reflect:

  • “Why are you excited to read this book?”

Not quite ready?

Give your child two choices so they can choose a book for themself. You can also help them narrow down which books they will choose for others if they’d like to do that too.

Ready for more?

After reading, your child can share whether they would recommend that book to others and why.
