Materials:

Purple flower

paper; crayons, markers or paint; family pictures: they do not have to be printed, if possible, include pictures of your family engaging in activities together

Your Child Will Learn

How to recognize familiar people in photographs and create artwork with assistance.

Here's What To Do

1

As a family, look through family pictures together. Encourage your child to describe or act out what they notice, or name the people they recognize.

2

After, create artwork together as a family. You can make a family portrait, or artwork representing activities or celebrations you like to do together, special foods you eat, whatever you choose!

3

You can work together to draw or paint pictures, or work individually on different sheets of paper. Then, put them all together to make a family book.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Before you begin, smile at each other and share something you like to do together. All done? You’re ready to begin!
E

Engage:

  • “Point to yourself in this picture. What are we doing in this picture? What do you want to draw for our family artwork?”
  • “What part should your sister draw? How about Grandma? Can she draw something too?”
E

Encourage:

  • Scribbles or whatever your child creates are wonderful! Encourage and praise their efforts.
  • “Wow! You are working so hard. Tell me about what you are drawing with your sister.”
R

Reflect:

  • “What should we create as a family next?”

Not quite ready?

While you’re looking at the pictures, describe the people and activities to help your child become familiar with them. Your child can also suggest the activity they’d like to do together as a family - like dance or sing together.

Ready for more?

Demonstrate new techniques and encourage your child to try them. For example, use family pictures to create and decorate a collage together.
