Explore An Art Museum
Here's What To Do
1
Plan a trip to an art museum. (If you're not able to visit an art museum, you could look at art in a school hallway or check out a library book about artists instead).
2
While inside the museum, tell your child to point to art they like or find interesting.
3
Ask your child questions that will help them to describe what they see and experience.
4
Take pictures of your child and the art you see and review them after you leave the museum.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Get on eye-level with your child, explain museum behavioral expectations, and give them a hug.
E
Engage:
- "We're at the art museum! Your job is to be on the lookout for art you like. Tell me when you see something you like!"
- "In this room, my favorite thing is this painting here with all the rainbow colors. What do you like best?"
E
Encourage:
- Ask your child questions about the lines, shapes, textures and colors they see in the art.
- "It's so fun to look at art with you! You're a great artist too!"
R
Reflect:
- How did your child respond to the museum and what grabbed their attention?
Not quite ready?
Focus on 1-2 areas in the museum instead of trying to see all exhibits.
Ready for more?
Ask your child to describe what they see in different artwork, and encourage them to ask questions about the meaning of the artwork.

As your child masters this skill...
They will learn to appreciate visual art.
