Draw Yourself as a Classroom Helper!
Here's What To Do
1
Discuss the different kinds of classroom helpers with your child, like line leaders, librarians, and table cleaners. Then pick a job and have your child draw a picture of themselves doing it.
2
Let your child pick their favorite.
3
Encourage them to draw a picture of themselves doing the job. Have them think about what they would wear or what they might be holding.
4
Talk about their pictures as they are drawing, helping them to add details that are specific to the classroom helper role they’ve chosen.
Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Pull together some drawing materials and settle down in front of them.
E
Engage:
- “What job do you like to do in your classroom? Do you want to draw yourself being the line leader, the weather reporter, or the plant helper?”
- What does a line leader look like? Are there any special tools that the line leader needs?
E
Encourage:
- If your child is having trouble getting started, give them a few prompts to get their creative juices flowing, such as, “I bet the planter helper needs a watering can.”
- “It’s okay if it’s not perfect, your drawing is all about your ideas!”
R
Reflect:
- What do you like best about the job you picked?
Not quite ready?
Let your child choose a helper job and have them direct you to make the drawing with them.
Ready for more?
Have them “present” their drawing, explaining what their job is and why it’s important!
As your child masters this skill...
They will be able to describe the role of a classroom helper.
